New York City is one of those places that people fall in love with before they even set foot on the sidewalks. It is a mecca for dreamers, aspiring artists and ambitious businessmen the way that Paris is a mecca for lovers and romantics. I remember the day I moved to New York, I was a wide-eyed post-graduate who had just spent three months living in France and who had no game plan for what I would do in NYC once I arrived. I didn’t know any of the neighborhoods, had yet to discover the amazing food scene and was really only scratching the surface of the Big Apple.
Flash forward almost four years later and the New York I know and love now is much different from the New York I was first introduced to. The city has unveiled itself to me over time, showing me charming streets I had never noticed, hole-in-the-wall eateries with fantastic food and attractions I had always missed. It almost seems a shame that the New York City we discover after spending years here is one that is rarely shared with tourists. Travelers arrive here, have a handful of days to explore and end up seeing the same tourist traps and tourist-facing restaurants; all the while missing out on that classic New York experience.
