When exploring a new city, I love to spend some time at a local market. It is a fun way to get to know your destination, to eat your way through the city and to discover all kinds of unique things. Berlin is home to many great markets! There is no better way to experience the atmosphere of Berlin than to visit one of markets in this city. The following are a few of the best markets to visit while on holiday in Berlin.
Street Food Thursday at Markthalle Neun
This market is heaven for every foodie! When entering the building, you will first notice crowds roaming around, talking in different languages and eating. The smell of barbecue, Asian food and fresh made waffles can be sensed while strolling through the alleys of the booths.
The assortment of food is awesome: Mexican tacos, Spanish tapas, Belgian waffles, traditional German food and even vegan food. There is heaps to choose from and food provided for everyone’s taste and preferences. The selection of desserts will make every person with a sweet tooth happy as well! Most dishes are small, so that you can try as many dishes as possible and can simply eat your way through the market!
Berlin Village Market at Neue Heimat
Every Sunday, this event combines street food from around the world with music and art from Berlin as well as drinks. What more do you need on a Sunday? Let’s start with the good stuff: the food! Just to name of few: Polish pirogis, Latin tacos and Asian specialties. The variety of street food offered changes weekly so that you will always discover something new. If you are up for some dessert, your appetite will be appeased just as well. During my visit I spotted waffles and some yummy-looking cakes, too. The Berlin Village Market is an awesome place to spend a Sunday with your friends while enjoying some delicious food, listening to good music and relaxing in a cool (and typical for Berlin) ambience.
The Sunday Market at Mauerpark
The Mauerpark is the place that first comes to your mind when thinking about a market in Berlin. It can be described as a mixture of delicious street food, a huge flea market and karaoke that should not be missed. The market does not only sell second hand clothing but also vintage and designer clothing, jewelry, antiques and everything in between. You can find great bargains and sometimes little treasures, if you keep an eye out.
If you get hungry, food trucks will await you with all kinds of street food. The first thing that I always get is a refreshing fresh pressed juice. My personal highlight is the karaoke that takes place on the stage outside of the flea market. It usually starts at 3 pm, everyone can participate and it’s for free. It is the place to go as soon as the sun comes out to play in Berlin. Don’t miss spending some time at Mauerpark, if you have the opportunity!
